Tamiya's response was all I needed to hear and off we went.
After building 1:20 and 1:24 scale kits for the past 8 years or so (my dad actually got me started building when I was around 5, and no I am not 13 years old now), I soon realized a 1:12 scale subject is a completely different animal than the smaller scale subjects we have all had to get used to over the past several years.
A 1:12 scale subject is actually big enough to create subassemblies that build up in a very similar way to the actual subject. Given that premise, we than asked ourselves which subassemblies would provide the most satisfying build experience and help teach the builder, not only some new techniques, but would open their eyes to what it takes to build the real thing. Here is what we came up with:
Hub and rotor set-ups
Wire and fuel management details
Wheel assemblies
3 piece operational dzus fasteners
A comprehensive Up Close & Mechanical Photo Research CD of the actual 001 car.
Along with many other details for the thingypit, front end and engine compartment, we quickly came to realize this Big Scale Super Detail Kit could be the mother of all aftermarket kits.
We knew we had big shoes to fill!
As I mentioned earlier, and many of you may already know, Tamiya's 1:12 scale 935 Porsche was such a world class, state of the art kit back when it was first released in the late 1970's, that it is still arguablly one of the finest 1:12 scale kits ever created. Scale Motorsport's contribution would need to live up to the standards that Tamiya created almost twenty-five years.
One of the first issues a company needs to address when developing a product is what market will this product appeal to most and what the price point needs to be. The market would be easy to define, and definately be for the intermediate to advanced builder, interested in expanding their building skills while learning a great deal about one of the world's most fabulous race cars. However, I didn't want to define or limit the possibilities by establishing a premature price level until we had all the components in hand, and evaluate each component's contribution to the overall kit. The price point would be established based on which family of components would create the most satisfying build experience.
Release date and pricing:
At the time of this writing, we are still developing all the components and will not have a final retail price until the end of March or begining of April 2003. We are working towards a release date of May 2003 and will be presenting our 001 build to The Tamiya Model Company at the Shizuoka Hobby Show this May.
In the meantime, we invite you to take a look at our development activites so far. I am anxious to get your your feedback. If there is something you would like to see in the final kit components, the sooner we hear from you the better. Once April rolls around, we will be well into production, so don't wait too long!

Up Close & Mechanical Photo Research CD
Those of you familiar with our award winning Porsche 956 Collaborative kit became familiar with Scale Motorsport's Up Close & Mechanical Photo Research CD. Our Big Scale 935 Super Detail Kit will include its own UC&M Photo Reseach CD containing 100 high detail images, plus technical data comparing both the factory 934 and 935. Here are several images from the photo shoot of the 001 car.

Turned Metal Components
No other aftermarket product has ever been developed like this one! Accuracy is essential in any model building effort, that's what we all strive for isn't it? However, at 1:12 scale accuracy its critical! Fit and finish is very evident, and those head magnifiers we have all grown used to wearing over the past few years have become essential. Errors in a 1:12 scale part will be evident by the naked eye!
To ensure dead fit accuracy we decided to use the same engineering software many of the real race teams use to develop their parts (don't ask though, we won't tell you!). The software allows us to use CNC equipment for manufacturing that will produce precisely fitting components. Please take a look at several of the components that will come packaged with your Porsche 935 Big Scale Super Detail Kit:

Photoetch Nickel Steel and Brass Details
Our 935 Big Scale Super Kit will come packed with a rich assortment of many different types of photoetched details and materials. Sheet sizes are twice as large and some are one and a half times as large as our standard sheets. Various gauge thicknesses will faithfully replicate many different parts such as: 1. Four piece brake rotor detail that includes cross drilled and vented discs with hub rotors bolted together 2. Wheel centers of thick brass bolted to turned aluminum inner and outer wheel rims just like the real car. 3. Accurate screen and mesh patterns you mold to the correct contours ..............and hundreds of more details too many to list at this time.
