Has anyone started their kit yet? If so post here on your progress so far.
I should be getting my kit next week and plan on starting next weekend! My first steps will be diving into the reference CD, comparing details on what should be added over and above the SMS detail set, and making a full set of building notes for modifications.
One of the areas I want to get right is the color of the chassis/floorpan. I think this is going to make or break the model. I few years ago I built the 935 box stock and painted the chassis a semi gloss with Tamiya paint. It looked nice but did not have that real look. I'm thinking this time around I'm going to try and do a weatherd or worn look to the interior floor pan and a few other areas. I don't want to do a "after the race" weathering, more of a "fresh from the after race rebuild" look. Anyone have any ideas? Washes? Multiple coats and burnishing? Let's get the ideas flowing!

Tim - I had the same impression. I need to get started very soon, I was thinking of strating with a flat black and using SNJ aluminum powder to highlight some of the areas that get warn such as the foot well and to high light a couple of other areas. To bring the gloss up I think a very light rubbing of wax would do the job. I am also a bit concerned about how much to paint black. It looks like the area behind the seat is white. For contrast I think I will leave that in white primer. What do you think?

Yea, I was thinking the same. The method that aircraft modelers use to simulate paint wear on the front of flying surfaces comes to mind. I think they use a combination of dry brushing and chalks to replicate the wear. On the floorpan of the 912 I owned it was also very bumpy, but I believe this was a tar based undercoating that was sprayed on. Does the 935 look rough or smooth?

Tim - The inside floor pan is smooth. I remember the tar like coating. I had a 74 911 and it was on everything. Kind of a Tutonic rust and sound proofing. The 935 doesn't have it. On the SMS photos, up close the floor pan looks dead flat black with areas that the paint has been worn away. I can't really tell from my other referances, but I tend to think it was just painted to reduce glare and flat black would be the ideal color.

I have been in process for about two weeks now. It just started out as "trying a few things out" but has developed into the full build. So far, I have most of the dash put together, the early stages of the engine (short block, distributor and cooling fan) and most of the front wheels (exclusing the bolts). So far so good but there are some things to watch out for. Most notably, there are some things included in the PE that aren't referenced in the instructuions. One example isthe ignition key which is on PE sheet D!

Hi,
I started Xmas day.....doing little things and it turned into building really fast!
I decided to paint the interior and underside krylon semi gloss black...a little shine, not plastic looking but not boring flat black....I'll post a pic as soon as I figure it out...
