Well, I couldn't resist any longer. I put together the rims last night. They are really the center piece of this whole project. My wife commented that they looked like jewelry. I am a bit torn though. BBS wheels had bit duller surface. I know these need a clear coat or the brass will tarish to an unacceptable finish. I am debating wether to use gloss or dull coat. I would really like to keep the high polish, but it is of questionable accuracy, but it is very nice. Any thoughts?

Do you want the "bling" or do you want to be accurate? ;D Don't give into the dark side Luke.... LOL! Seriously though, one of the things I notice most in all the reference photos I have is the "get the job done" look to all the parts on the car. They were not worried about finish unless the finish had someting to do with performance. This car was made to go fast, not look good! They just got lucky with the looks!! Tim

Tim - you are quite right about the get it done part. Most peole don't realize how crude bits on these cars can get. I suppose when it rolled out the door for the first time, it looked quite tidy. I think a mate finish is called for, and that is what it will get. Pete

Even worse Pete is I have still not made up my mind on doing the HT 78 car. It's wheels are black BBS's!! Ouch. That would be tough.

Paint these wheels black? ? I'd rather shoot myself in the foot. Actually the photos I have seem to indicate a differant type of wheel all together. They have a conical cross section which runs from the center of the rim to the edge in a straight line. Now that may be a wheel cover. I really can't tell from the one photo that I have which shows the wheels. If I had to do that car, I would do a pit diorama, up on airjacks, use the kit wheels and save the rims for another project. Testors dull coat over the brass parts. The wheels now have just the right finish for BBS. I have seen several photos of the Martini car and the rims are polished nicely, so you can leave that part alone. 'nuf said? By the way the tire stems look very nice in place. Pete J.

Sounds great Pete! You have a digital camera? If so shoot some pics and email them to me and I'll post them here.
Also I got my detail set Monday and have spent the last couple of nights going over things and preparing to get started. I'm hoping to start painting this weekend. BTW one of the first questions I came up with is the hand brake (or is it a swaybar adjustment?) in the cockpit next to the gear shift. The reference CD does not show it, are you going to include it?

Tim - I believe that is either brake proportioning or as is suggested suspention adjustment. I don't have any referance photos of it, other than the Tamiya referances. I suspect that it is replaced by the hydralic valve in the referance photos. I think I will build up both and then decide. Pete

The valve with the big knob is the turbo boost adjustment I believe. That is used in conjunction with the dash mounted boost gauge to set the wastegate blowoff pressure. I think the adjustment lever is for the sway bar rates. That's going to bring up a whole-nuther set of problems with the kit sway bar links.... Tim

Here's my take on the wheels. Even though I'd like to make an accurate model, more than that, I want it to look good. The wheels are definitely a centerpiece on this kit. Here's my plan: Brass center assembly: high polish to round the edges a bit and get a smoooth surface, then Testers DullCote to give it the matt look. Aluminum rims: These are quite crude as delivered. The lathe marks are correct for a 1:1 turned part, not 1:12. The solution is to chuck them up, then polish away the turning marks. Even though these should be semi-matt to matt, the look of the golden "cast" centers on a polished reflective rim is awesome and that is my plan. Here's an example of that in 1:24 using the mutlimedia wheels from M&S: Check out the hub reflection on the rear rim below:

Being the perfectionist that I am, I decided that once the centers of the rims were put together I would bead-blast them to give them the cast look they really are and then clear coat them. The first one has come out excellent! Now I just have to assemble the other 3 ha ha! Wish me luck.

Hey Paul, glad to see you are on this site. Perhaps we can resurrect it. Lazbun - I have seen Paul's rims and the bead blasting really improved the look. Much better. Pete J.

Hi Paul, I can't wait to see your pictures. Is there any way I can make this forum to notify me when I get a reply from my post?
